Memorial Day Weekend Travel Tips From Alaska and Horizon

SEATTLE, May 23, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Alaska Airlines (NYSE:ALK) and Horizon Air are expecting heavy passenger traffic over the long Memorial Day weekend.

To help provide a pleasant travel experience, the airlines are offering tips to make travel as convenient and easy as possible:

Check in the night before. Customers with an early flight can check in the night before with Web check-in. Go to www.alaskaair.com, enter the electronic ticket number or confirmation code, print the boarding pass and you're ready for the morning.

Instant Travel Machine. Another quick option is to check in and print a boarding pass at one of Alaska's or Horizon's Instant Travel Machines. ITMs are located at 70 airports systemwide and at many off-airport locations.

Pack smart. When possible, travel light. Federal rules allow each customer to carry one standard-size carry-on bag and one personal item such as a purse, briefcase or laptop computer. Place contact information inside and outside of each carry-on or checked bag.

Go express. Remember that in Seattle, Spokane and Portland special express lines are available at security checkpoints for passengers with no carry-on or personal items and for MVP Gold cardholders. They are also available for Horizon Shuttle passengers traveling between Seattle and Portland.

No sharp objects. Remember knives of any size, scissors, fingernail files and other sharp objects are not allowed in carry-on baggage. Place these items in checked baggage only.

Limit electronic devices. Security screeners may ask you to turn on each electronic device you carry on. The fewer cell phones, pagers, CD players, etc., the quicker the process. Laptop computers must be removed from carrying cases prior to putting them through check-point scanners.

Remove metal objects. Take off watches, metal jewelry, belts with large buckles and any other metal objects and send them through the scanner. Do the same with coins, keys and other metal that may be in your pockets.

Allow plenty of time. Arrive at the airport up to two hours before scheduled departure. Go to alaskaair.com and click on Travel Advisories for recommended times for specific airports. If not checked in and at the gate ready to board at least 20 minutes prior to scheduled departure (30 minutes for international flights), your reservation may be cancelled.

If plans change. If you have checked bags and your plans change after checking in, or if you wish to standby for an earlier flight, notify a customer service agent immediately.

Pack patience. To enhance security takes extra time. Passengers may be randomly selected for more thorough security screening. Patience makes the screeners' duties and your trip easier.
